Ethical Claim

This conflict still relates
to the problems our society faces to this very day. All over the world we are
still fighting for resources no matter the cost. In fact, the documentary
Virunga displays how just recently Africa is still being fought over for
resources. What we must understand is that the capitalist mindset that was originally
adopted by the Europeans to exploit Africa is still alive today. The ethical
argument that these texts make is that it is inhumane to justify the exploitation
of a type of people because of their race. We see in our first text of King
Leopold’s Ghost how Leopold tries to justify his movement into Africa by saying
that it is the white man’s duty to help the Africans. Sadly, similar forms of
racism are still alive today. Lately in American news we have seen many riots
in Ferguson, Baltimore, and New York started by the mistreatment of African
American citizens. Although these current issues are in fact different from
past concerns of Africa, we can see that both issues bring the ethical idea of
racism into question. If we can still not learn to respect those who deserve
it, regardless of race, who have we become as people? Have we really learned
from what happened to South Africa years ago? If we reexamine our texts such
as, The Conservationist, Things Fall Apart, and King Leopold’s Ghost we can see
how we are still facing similar questions of ethics today, as we did many years
ago in Southern Africa.
